Did a bug ever fly in your mouth? Usually, the story ends there. You spit it out. Goodbye, bug. But sometimes — gulp! — you might swallow it so it ends up in your stomach. Less often, someone might inhale a bug into the lungs. (more…)

Playgrounds

Do you have a favorite playground? Maybe it’s a new wooden one that has lots of tall towers and passageways. Or maybe your favorite is an old-fashioned playground with swings and a seesaw. Playgrounds are fun places for kids because there’s so much to do and other kids to have fun with. (more…)

Motherhood

Velcro diapers versus cloth. Five-point harnesses versus standard belts. Batteries of shots. Sophisticated sign language. Daily milestone tracking. Infant play dates. Is childrearing different today than it was in the past? You bet your sippy cup it is. (more…)

Bottlefeeding

Sometimes the last thing you want to do is give your baby a bottle. This is why bottle propping – putting something like a receiving blanket under the bottle to hold it up – is appealing. Hands-free feeding equals more time for Mom. But is this practice safe? This is an issue that elicits strong opinions. (more…)

Bringing home baby

Before Gideon was born, Blair was the easiest, most pleasant, agreeable child I, or any of my friends and family, had ever known. I kid you not … from Sunday school teachers to my friends with more, uhm, “active” children, I was the envy of everyone. Some of my friends (with second children) told me I was in for it with number two, that he/she would make my head spin. Others told me they hoped number two would be as wonderful as Blair. (more…)
